This week, Jon Rahm appeared on the “Golf Sin Etiquetas” podcast, which is in Spanish. As translated by “handicap_54” on Twitter, Rahm said he believes “LIV will continue”.

“2 minutes before the announcement came out someone from the PGA Tour contacted me and told me everything. I thought it was a joke. And this is what they should have done from the beginning. Instead they generated division then decided to come together again… “I hope they reach an agreement. I think LIV will continue, from what I understand when I talked to their players, none of them intend to return to the PGA Tour. They left for a reason.”

After the proposed merger between the PGA Tour and the PIF, many speculated that the PIF would look to stop funding LIV and instead focus their attention on the PGA Tour. However, there has been no indication from LIV or anyone close to LIV that that may be a possibility.

Rahm also said of the LIV players that “none of them intend to return to the PGA Tour”, which would coincide with what Phil Mickelson tweeted on Monday.

?What a colossal waste of time. Not a single player on LIV wants to play PGA Tour. It would require a public apology and restitution to LIV playersfor paying millions to Clout media to disparage all of us.A better topic is future sanctions for the many players who now come to LIV

— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) July 30, 2023

Rahm then addressed the poorly sourced “rumors” that come up every so often that he’s a player who may be heading to LIV. Not surprisingly, he denied the rumors.

“I laugh when people rumor me with LIV. I’ve never liked the format. And I always have a good time with Phil and Sergio in the practice rounds of majors.”

There has been a lot of hostility from both sides of the PGA Tour/LIV Golf war, but Jon Rahm has been a quite measured and balanced throughout all of the chaos.

Still makes no sense to call it a merger when there would be no free-flowing back and forth movement of players between the Tours. What is being devised by the Saudis, clearly, is making LIV the higher, more Elite tour than the PGA Tour.

In August of 2014, Rory McIlroy walked off of Valhalla Golf Club with his fourth major championship at just 25-years-old. As the sun set in Louisville, Kentucky, most people watching Rory host the Wanamaker Trophy wondered just how many majors the Northern Irishman could win.

Fast forward to August of 2023 and Rory McIlroy is quickly approaching ten years without a major championship. He’s come up empty time and time again, but his putting coach and close friend Brad Faxon is sticking by his pupil.

While speaking with Golf Today, Faxon addressed McIlroy’s recent major performances, and took aim at an unnamed instructor, saying:

“He didn’t have a great putting couple of days but he had a great final round and a great putting week. And you know, when Rory McIlroy finishes fifth in a major, tied for sixth in a major, the world is going to end according to some of the media.

“The guy is a hell of a player. He hasn’t finished out of the top 10 in a tournament it seems like the last seven events. He’s played very well in majors except for the Masters this year.”

“It bugs me to no end, and what particularly bugs me, and I hope whoever posted this one is listening now, because when other instructors want to criticize Rory’s stroke or Rory or potentially me, when they don’t know anything about how a player thinks and what motivates them, what drives them, it’s beyond reproach.”

McIlroy will have plenty more chances to win another major, with some intriguing courses on the schedule for 2024. After the Masters, the PGA Championship will return to Valhalla for the first time since Rory won in 2014.

The opening round of the Wyndham Championship was an uncomfortable affair for the players with early tee times. There was a constant downpour with wet and soggy conditions for the entirety of the round.

Englishman Matt Wallace had some problems with the course outside of the sloppy conditions. Despite playing well on the day (-3), Wallace complained about Sedgefield Country Club to reporters after the round.

The 33-year-old briefly tied for the lead but finished his final five holes in +2.

“A bit pissed off actually with the finish, playing nicely. Yeah, just frustrated. I don’t like this golf course.”

When asked why, Wallace gave his explanation.

“Because the runoffs are just absolutely ridiculous and this — it’s just not fun to play,” he said. “Hit a shot out of the rough on the last and it landed on the front and runs backwards 40 yards. Like, it’s just not great. Yeah, I shouldn’t be in the rough, but it’s difficult to hit the fairway all the time, especially like this.

“And then hit shots to the front and just — this is my third time playing. Every single time like, yeah, 83 percent of the winners hit green in regulations pretty much, so a lot of green in regulations is key, but the penalty for miss — even on the par-3 down the hill, 12, you can’t go long because you can putt it off the green, so you play the smart play and you play it towards the front, the middle and, from 220 yards, I mean, it’s just — it’s too severe, so they need to do something about it.”

Donald Ross designs are known for their tricky green complexes and Sedgefield Country Club is no different. Although he may not love the course, Wallace needs a good performance to make the FedEx Cup playoffs. He currently sits at 80th in the standings with the top-70 advancing to TPC Southwind next week.

“I want to be here,” he said. “I just don’t like the golf course. I want to be here, I want to play here and I want to play well. Maybe I shouldn’t say that. And hopefully if I win, I’ll say something different at the end of the week — I absolutely love this golf course. But I know the way to play well around here — you’ve got to hit lots of greens, and I felt like I’m doing that. You know, the putting was good today, which has been great. I hit quite a few greens, especially early on.

“I just think the penalty is just really, really severe, especially with bermudagrass, you know. It’s difficult to chip and play, and I just think — yeah, just personally, my personal belief, my personal preference is if I play or design a golf course, I just have areas where it wouldn’t just carry on running away. I hit 5-iron into the last there and it pitches at the front and then doesn’t go anywhere and runs 20 yards down, you know. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being me and being a bit bitchy, but yeah, it’s just how — it’s just how I see the golf course. Runoffs in the fairway, you can hit the fairway and they run into the rough. I mean, I don’t see that.”

Wallace is doing his best to get himself in the right state of mind for round two.

“Just know that — I’m trying to like it, I’m trying to like it. I think the most important person here this week with me is my psychologist and we’re trying to enjoy the tournament rather than what it produces. So great tournament, great sponsor. Just for me, I just don’t like — if I don’t have to come here, I wouldn’t, but I kind of need to.”

It appears a rivalry is brewing in New York between AFC East quarterbacks Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers.

Josh Allen, who plays for the Buffalo Bills and Aaron Rodgers, who plays for the New York Jets are both avid golfers. Both QB’s are fantastic at their second sport.

In February, Aaron Rodgers won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with PGA Tour professional Ben Silverman as his playing partner.

Josh Allen appeared on Barstool Sport’s “Pardon My Take” this week, and went as far as to say that Aaron Rodgers cheated in his victory.

Aaron Rodgers: CHEATER?!@rhoback pic.twitter.com/XZ9xufogrZ

— Pardon My Take (@PardonMyTake) August 2, 2023

“I love Aaron, but he [cheated]. He sandbagged not just me, but the world. He may have gotten seven or eight strokes too many, or nine”.

Allen continued by saying that a lot of golfers agreed Rodgers was getting way too many strokes for the tournament.

The two quarterbacks will face off twice this year on the football field.
