From the creators of Westworld, Amazon Prime Video debuted their ambitious sci-fi drama The Peripheral in Oct. 2022 and instantly attracted an audience. The series is loosely based on the 2014 book of the same name by William Gibson, set years into the future. With an intriguing storyline and strong cast made up of Chloë Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, Gary Carr, and others, it’s no wonder viewers were hooked to The Peripheral.
It’s been over six months since the first season wrapped up late last year, and of course, fans are on the edge of their seats to find out what’ll happen next. The good news is that The Peripheral season 2 is definitely happening, but the bad news is that it might not come out for a while.
While we wait for more updates on The Peripheral season 2, here’s everything we know so far about the highly anticipated second season!
Good news came a few months after The Peripheral concluded its first season, with Amazon Prime Video confirming in Feb. 2023 that a second season is in the works! In a statement, executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan said they were “thrilled to continue the journey” with another season. Moretz took to Instagram at the time to share the renewal announcement, posting a fun graphic.

As expected, Moretz’s fans flocked to her comments section to tell her they can’t wait for the second season. Neither can we!
Well, yes and no. There’s no way The Peripheral season 1 marks the end of Flynne’s story, especially since we know a second season is happening. But one version of Flynne is dead by the end of the season 1 finale, leaving us with so many questions as to what’s next. So what happens? Well, in order to fake her own death, Flynne cooks up a plan with Lowbeer, which sees her creating a new parallel timeline and having Conner kill her original stub. So now, Flynne is alive as another version of herself.
The creator of the show has been extremely tight-lipped about what we can expect for season 2, but once we get an official synopsis we’ll be sure to add it to this article.
We’re expecting most of the cast of season 1 to return for the second season, which includes but is not limited to:
Two cast members we don’t see coming back in the second season are Moe Bar-El as Reece and Ben Dickey as Sheriff Jackman, as both characters are killed off in season 1.
One of the reasons we don’t see The Peripheral returning for a second season anytime soon is because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes. In case you missed it, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are both on strike after not being able to come to an agreement on their updated contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
These two ongoing strikes mean that writers in the WGA and actors in the SAG-AFTRA cannot work on their movies and shows, leading to many titles being put on hold or pushed back. At the time of this writing, we have no evidence to believe the writers’ room for The Peripheral season 2 had even begun before the writers’ strike started, and they’ll have to wait until the strike is over to either start or continue working on it.
There’s really no way to predict how long the writers’ and actors’ strikes will continue. It all depends on how much the studios are willing to compromise.
All of that being said, The Peripheral season 2 does not have a release date, and I think at this point we can count out 2023 as a possible timeframe. If the season hasn’t been written yet, they’ll have to wait for the writers’ strike to conclude to do so, and then have to wait for the actors’ strike to end to start filming. The first season was filmed in London, England, so it’s always possible that they might have a contract with the British union Equity instead of SAG-AFTRA, but at this time that’s unconfirmed.
In any case, The Peripheral season 2 cannot be written while the writers’ strike is still going on, so we’re predicting a 2024 release date. As we get any updates about the progress of the second season, we will update this article.
While we wait for any news about the second season, you might be wanting to do a rewatch of the first. The Peripheral is produced by Amazon Studios, meaning it’s exclusively streamed on Amazon Prime Video. You can watch all eight episodes of the first season on that platform.
